If you’re self-publishing your opus, you’re probably not thinking about putting a lot of money into the process. After all, let’s be honest. It is the easiest way to get your work out there quickly and with the least cost to you.
But that doesn’t mean you want to skimp.
Instead, you may look into other ways to perfect your writing that go beyond the help of your next-door neighbor. That’s where online apps come into play.
Pros and Cons of Going Online
The idea out-of-the-box is attractive. But it’s not without its faults. Let’s review the obvious and unapparent benefits and disadvantages.
Advantages of the Solo Approach
The primary perk is that you minimize your costs to some degree. You will have to dish out some cash regardless of what method you choose to get optimal results. But it is a deal maker.
The second factor that tips it in this direction is control. You are in charge without an editor insisting on changes you don’t want. You’re trying to create your voice which is a major motivator.
Another benefit applies to you and your future endeavors. If you use an online editing site or software, you’re going to learn from your mistakes. That will make subsequent projects easier and improve your writing. I believe that it’s one of the best things in its favor.
The Downside of Self-Editing
There is one glaring con of going this route that you must consider. No matter what program or website you use, it won’t replace a human reading your work.
Sure, they’re better today than they were several years ago. The companies have improved their algorithms. However, they can’t grasp context fully. They will flag errors that are frankly outrageous. They may miss blatant errors. And forget slang or brand names.
Then, there’s the elephant in the room.
Editing isn’t fun. It’s probably the task you hate most about writing at all. And that’s why these people get paid the big bucks. Their service is worth the price.
So, what should you do?
Learning About Your Options
If shelling out the dough for editing is out of reach, online editing apps still offer some value. You just need to understand what you’re getting. The fact remains that using one or more is better than sending out a raw manuscript.
